THE CHALLENGE:
The creative industry is filled with talent, but many independent designers and artists struggle to get recognized in mainstream publications. There was a gap in the market for a platform that not only showcased cutting-edge creative work but also embraced the raw, unfiltered perspectives of the artists behind it. The goal was to create a magazine that felt like an insider’s look into the creative process: authentic, rebellious, and visually striking.
THE SOLUTION:
I co-founded Afterdark Magazine, a publication dedicated to featuring independent designers, artists, and creatives who push boundaries. The name “Afterdark” comes from a familiar reality for creatives—the 3AM designers, the ones who stay up long after deadlines, creating in the quiet hours when inspiration hits hardest. The magazine was built for them.
Visually, the magazine embraces bold, high-contrast layouts, unconventional typography, and a raw, editorial feel, reinforcing the underground, avant-garde nature of its content. The content strategy focused on in-depth interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and portfolio spotlights that go beyond surface-level aesthetics. Each issue became a curated experience, designed to connect creative professionals with a community that values originality and artistic risk-taking.
MY PART:
As co-founder and creative director, I:
✔ Named the magazine based on the shared experience of late-night creative work.
✔ Developed the magazine’s brand identity—from its name and visual style to its editorial voice.
✔ Designed the magazine layouts to reflect the dynamic, high-energy nature of the creative work being showcased.
✔ Curated content by selecting featured artists and working closely with contributors to ensure a cohesive narrative.
✔ Led the creative direction for promotional assets, ensuring that marketing aligned with the magazine’s aesthetic and mission.
✔ Built a strong creative network, connecting with designers, artists, and industry professionals to expand the magazine’s reach.
Afterdark Magazine isn’t just a publication—it’s a platform for creatives who refuse to play by the rules.
